Balboa – Relay Kit for Connecting a Heat Pump to Spa Controls

The Balboa 59081 relay kit connects a heat pump to the control box of your spa, so you can add a particularly energy-efficient heating system to your installation. It is intended for Balboa BP, GL and GS series systems (except GS100), as well as Gecko and Waterway systems, with modifications on some of them. It does not replace a heater: it is the interface that lets your spa control switch a heat pump.

Compatibility of the 59081 heat pump relay kit

This relay kit is suitable for the following control systems:

• Balboa BP series
• Balboa GL series
• Balboa GS series, except GS100
• Gecko
• Waterway

Some systems need modifications before the kit can be used. If you are unsure about your own spa, please contact us and quote the part number shown on the back of your current control system, and we will help you check it.

How the relay kit works

The kit takes the 230V supply voltage from the heater, wired in parallel with the heating element (the resistor). It then converts this voltage into a dry contact, which acts as the command signal.

This dry contact can be used on any heat pump that has an external activation input. In practice, your spa control keeps managing the heating as usual, while the relay passes the heating demand on to the heat pump.

Using a heat pump with or instead of the heater

Depending on your application, there are two ways to use this kit:

• Heat pump instead of the original heater. In this case, the heat pump must have its own flow detection.
• Heater and heat pump together, working simultaneously.

Choose the arrangement that suits your spa and your heat pump, and check the heat pump specification before you order.

Before you order and documentation

Check that your control system belongs to one of the supported series and that your heat pump offers an external activation input. Remember that the GS100 is not covered by this kit.
