Magic Plastics
Magic Plastics makes pump fittings for hot tubs, such as the 78 mm pump union split nut. At PoolParthub.com you will find pump union nuts and other plumbing connection parts for hot tub pumps, so you can match the size you need. The right part lets you repair a leaking or damaged connection instead of replacing the whole pump.
Magic Plastics pump unions and split nuts
Magic Plastics parts turn up wherever a pump, heater or filter has to be connected to rigid pipework and taken off again later. The union — a nut, a tailpiece and an O-ring — is what makes a wet end removable without cutting pipe. The nut itself is the part that takes the strain, and on hot tub and spa pumps it is very often a split nut: a nut made in two halves that clamp around the pipe and lock together, so the union can be released even when the pipework either side cannot be rotated.
Here you will find the split nut used on 78 mm pump unions, supplied as the replacement part for pumps where the original nut has cracked, seized or lost its thread. It is the kind of component that is rarely thought about until a drip appears under the equipment bay.
Why split nuts fail
Union nuts live a hard life. They are tightened and loosened every time a pump is serviced, they sit in a warm, damp compartment, and they are frequently over-tightened with pliers or a strap wrench when a leak will not stop. The usual outcomes are familiar to anyone who has worked on a spa pack:
- Hairline cracks — a star-shaped split radiating from the thread, often only visible once the nut is off and dry.
- Stripped or flattened threads — the nut spins without drawing the tailpiece up to the pump housing.
- Distortion — the two halves of a split nut no longer sit flush, leaving an uneven clamping load on the O-ring.
- Seized assemblies — scale and grit in the thread, so the nut has to be destroyed to free the pump.
In almost every case the nut is the part to change, not the pump. Replacing it is far cheaper and quicker than replumbing, and it restores the whole point of having a union in the first place.
Measuring before you order
Union sizing is a common source of confusion because the same fitting can be described by its pipe size, its thread size or the dimension across the nut. The safest approach is to measure what is in front of you rather than rely on how the pump was described when it was bought.
- Across the nut — measure the outside diameter of the nut across the flats or the widest point. This is the figure that distinguishes the 78 mm fitting from the larger and smaller nuts used elsewhere on spa equipment.
- Diamètre du filetage — measure the male thread on the pump housing or the tailpiece, not the pipe stub behind it.
- Check the construction — a one-piece nut and a split nut are not interchangeable. A split nut has a visible join line and comes apart into two halves.
- Count the O-ring — note the groove and the seal that sits in it; if the old O-ring is flattened, hardened or nicked, renew it at the same time as the nut.
- Photograph the assembly — before stripping anything, record how the tailpiece, O-ring and nut sit together, and note any position number on the pump’s exploded view.
Where a pump manual or exploded diagram is available, the part reference on that diagram is the quickest cross-check against the part number quoted here.
Fitting without creating a new leak
Union nuts seal on a face O-ring, not on the thread. That single fact prevents most repeat leaks. Thread tape and paste belong on tapered threads, not on a union, and adding them simply stops the nut drawing down squarely.
Fit the O-ring dry or with a thin smear of silicone lubricant, seat the tailpiece squarely against the pump, bring both halves of the split nut together so the join lines align, and tighten by hand. If a drip persists, the cause is nearly always a trapped, twisted or dirty O-ring, or a scored sealing face — not insufficient force. Over-tightening with tools is the most reliable way to crack a nut that was otherwise sound.
It is also worth isolating and draining the pipework properly before starting. Spa plumbing holds water above the pump, and a union released under a standing head will empty into the cabinet rather than into a bucket.

Here we list the Magic Plastics 78 mm pump union split nut, part 0121109020, for hot tub and spa pumps. It is stocked because it is a service item: a small moulding that decides whether a pump can be unbolted cleanly or has to be cut out, and one that is routinely damaged during otherwise straightforward maintenance.
If the thread diameter and the measurement across the nut match, this is a direct replacement. Where the existing seal has been in service for several seasons, renewing the O-ring alongside the nut is sensible — the two work together, and fitting a new nut against a tired seal is the most common reason a repair has to be done twice.
