Signs it needs replacing

Water weeping from the union collar during pump operation is the clearest failure signal — usually caused by a flat-spotted or chemically degraded O-ring, or a union nut that can no longer be tightened sufficiently because the thread has stripped or the body has cracked. If you find white calcium scale packed into the thread face and the nut will not fully seat even after cleaning, replace the kit rather than risk a pressurised leak. Discolouration and brittleness in the union body after several seasons of UV exposure also warrant replacement.

How to install it

Isolate the pump from mains power and close the isolation valves on both ports before starting. Unscrew the existing union nuts by hand or with a strap wrench — do not use pipe grips, which will crack the collar. Fit the new tail-piece adaptors to the pump ports and glue the corresponding slip sockets into the existing PVC pipework using pool-grade solvent cement; allow full cure time before pressurising. Seat the O-rings, hand-tighten the union nuts, then give each a quarter-turn with a strap wrench to achieve a firm, leak-resistant seal. Apply a pool-safe silicone lubricant to the O-rings before assembly to extend their service life.
