The HI3824 is a colorimetric chemical test kit designed to determine ammonia (NH3-N) concentrations in fresh water using an adaptation of the Nessler method. It covers a range of 0.0 to 2.5 mg/L (ppm) with a resolution of 0.5 mg/L, making it ideal for monitoring ammonia levels in pools, aquariums, fish farms, and other freshwater applications. Each kit arrives complete with all reagents and equipment needed to perform approximately 25 tests straight out of the box.

How it works

The Nessler reagent reacts with ammonia under strong alkaline conditions to form a yellow-coloured complex. The intensity of that colour is directly proportional to the ammonia concentration in the sample. A simple 10 mL water sample is treated with the included reagents; the resulting colour is then matched against a reference chart using the supplied colour comparison cube — no calibration, no batteries, and no complex instrumentation required.

What’s included

The HI3824 ships ready to use with a 20 mL plastic beaker, a colour comparison cube, one 20 mL dropper bottle of Ammonia Reagent 1 (formulated for fresh water), and one 20 mL dropper bottle of Nessler reagent. All reagent bottles are marked with expiration dates and lot numbers for full traceability. Replacement reagent packs (HI3824-025) are available separately, extending the life of the kit.

Why ammonia monitoring matters

Ammonia in water originates from the decomposition of organic matter, agricultural runoff, and biological waste. Even at low concentrations it can be harmful to aquatic life and is a recognised indicator of water quality deterioration. Regular testing with the HI3824 allows pool technicians and water management professionals to detect early ammonia spikes and take corrective action before conditions worsen.
