This is the genuine Pentair R170498 2-inch union fitting kit for the EU market, supplying both a 50 mm and a 63 mm union tailpiece so you can connect your pump to standard European pool plumbing in either pipe diameter. It fits the UltraFlow Plus family alongside the WhisperFlo, Challenger, and IntelliFlo pump ranges, providing a service-friendly, quick-disconnect interface between the pump ports and your PVC pipework.

The two union fittings connect the suction and discharge ports of the pump to the fixed pool pipework without gluing the pump permanently in place. When you need to pull the pump for a seal change or wet-end service, you unscrew the union nuts rather than cutting pipe — that’s the whole point of the union design. Each union consists of a tailpiece, a union nut, and a sealing O-ring that compresses to form a watertight joint under hand pressure alone.

R170498 is confirmed for the Pentair UltraFlow Plus family (all standard models), WhisperFlo (models P-WFL-071, 073, 101, 103, 151, 153, 201, 203, 301, 303), Challenger, and IntelliFlo. The EU version of the kit supplies 50 mm and 63 mm tailpieces to match the pipe diameters used in European installations — verify your existing pipe size before ordering.

A weeping joint at the pump inlet or outlet that persists after hand-tightening the union nut points to a cracked tailpiece, a scored union nut thread, or a flattened O-ring. UV exposure and chlorinated water degrade the PVC and rubber over time. If the union nut spins freely without clamping down, the thread is stripped and the complete kit should be replaced rather than repaired.

Isolate and drain the pump before starting. Unscrew the old union nuts, pull the pump free, and remove the old tailpieces from the pipework — they are solvent-welded into the pipe ends, so cut them flush and clean the pipe bore before gluing the new tailpieces in. Allow the solvent cement to cure fully (follow the cement manufacturer’s dwell time), then reattach the pump and hand-tighten both union nuts. No tools are required on the union nuts themselves; over-tightening with a wrench cracks the nut.

The O-ring seat geometry and thread pitch on genuine Pentair union nuts are dimensioned to mate precisely with the pump port flanges. Aftermarket union kits machined to looser tolerances can appear to seal initially but fail to compress the O-ring evenly, leading to slow weeps that are difficult to diagnose. Genuine R170498 is the only kit confirmed to OEM specification for the EU-market pump ports on the UltraFlow Plus and its sister ranges.
