How salt electrolysis works

Pool water passes continuously through the cell body, where a low-voltage electrical current applied across the titanium electrode stack drives electrolysis. The sodium chloride present in the water is split into sodium hypochlorite — natural, active chlorine — which returns to the pool already dissolved and ready to sanitise. Salt itself is not consumed in the process; only small top-up quantities are needed to compensate for water lost to backwashing or seasonal draining.

Cell life & routine care

Electrode efficiency gradually declines over years of use as mineral scale accumulates on the plates. Periodic acid or vinegar soaking removes calcium deposits and extends service life significantly. Keeping pool salt concentration within the manufacturer’s recommended band — typically around 3–5 g/L — and avoiding prolonged operation at maximum output both help preserve electrode coating integrity for as long as possible.

Electrolysis cells are brand- and model-specific: the replacement must match the original controller’s electrical parameters and mechanical fittings precisely. Confirm your existing control unit’s make, model, and rated chlorine output before ordering.
